Men Need Strong Bones, Too
You might think of weak bones as a woman’s problem, but men lose bone strength as they age, too. While men are less likely to develop osteoporosis, they do lose bone mass and strength. That can make you weaker and more prone to injury as you age.
If you don’t want this to happen to you, then you need to take action to keep your bones strong.
Conventional wisdom says that weight lifting is the best way to strengthen bones. Weight lifting does work, but it isn’t the best thing you can do.
New research publishing in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning found that high impact activities actually build bones better than weight lifting.
Researchers looked at the bone density and strength of people who regularly do weight lifting and of others who regularly include a high impact activity like running in their workout. They found that those in the latter group had better bone density.
While weight training strengthens bones as a result of stronger muscles, high impact training seems to directly trigger bone growth.
If you regularly workout, but stick to lower-impact activities like cycling and swimming, you might want to consider adding in a running or jump roping workout once or twice a week. This will enhance your results by making your bones stronger.
Stronger bones mean a better foundation for your whole body, and that’s a good thing for your health and fitness.
Stay well,
