Who Fills Your Grocery Cart?

Over the years I’ve become the “designated” grocery shopper. Please understand that of all the chores I do…this is the one I favor most. Since I enjoy cooking it enables me to “seek and search” for all the different food categories for my gourmet recipes.

Lately, I’ve been spending way to much time studying all the food labels. It’s not a bad idea since we all should be concerned about the nutritional value of the ingredients we digest. Luckily, the government has been very diligent about making sure that food labels do give us the adequate amount of information for making good food decisions. But what I hate most is trying to compute this information. Obviously, mathematics wasn’t my favorite subject in school.

Food Labels - Misused and Abused?

Recent studies indicate that more than half of Americans read food labels to help them make more informed choices. However, it appears that for many people, reading these labels is more confusing than it is helpful. For example, given that there were 2.5 servings in a 20 ounce bottle of soda, and given the amount of carbohydrate grams in each serving, less than a quarter of those surveyed were able to calculate how many carbohydrate grams were in each bottle.

Perhaps in order for consumers to be able to properly evaluate the nutritional content of a product, the labels should be made clearer. Nevertheless, the fact that so many grocery shoppers take the time to read the labels is a step in the right direction.
